Identification Methods and Instrumentation

We perform both DNA sequencing and MALDI-TOF microbial identification to characterize unknown isolates. All methods are validated for cGMP use and supported by curated databases to ensure reliable results.

Available methods include:

  • DNA sequencing using the Applied Biosystems 3500XL Genetic Analyzer with MicroSeq® ID software
    • Current libraries validated for comparison to a range of reference sequences
    • Enables species-level resolution for bacteria, yeast and mold
  • MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry using the Bruker MALDI Biotyper®
    • Based on protein profiling for rapid classification
    • Supports same-day identifications for bacteria and yeast

Both methods are routinely used for contamination source tracking, cleanroom monitoring investigations, and product release testing when isolate origin must be determined.

Sample Handling and Turnaround Options

Isolates are accepted from environmental monitoring, in-process testing, product evaluations, or remediation studies. Standard and expedited turnaround times are available, depending on urgency and sample type.

Our microbial identification lab maintains validated protocols for isolate prep, result review, and reporting. Custom library entries can also be developed as part of ongoing support programs.
